PB&J 5K on May 5, 2012

Reid & Reid are happy to be one of the sponsors for the PB&J 5K that is put on by the Junior Women’s Club of Hendersonville and will be held at Rugby Middle School at 9am.  The race will include a 1mi fun run at 10am and there will be awards for top female/ male finisher and the top three in age groups.  All proceeds will benefit the Children’s Clothing Closet which is a non-profit organization in Henderson County to help provide clothing for children in need residing in Henderson County. 

Reminder to parents:  mouthguards are important to help protect your kids teeth!

Spring has arrived and with that comes an increase in sports participation by kids.  Certain sports do have a higher incidence of damage to the teeth but tooth injuries can happen almost any time.  Reid & Reid recommends that kids wear mouthguards when playing any contact sport such as soccer and baseball that are currently “in season”.  In addition, sports such as hockey, lacrosse, and basketball would be considered contact sports and wearing a mouthguard is highly recommended.

In the past, Dr. Richard has provided a handout with “Tooth Tidbits” (a short list of answers to freqently asked questions) to any teachers who have been interested.  Some of the information in the “Tooth Tidbits” is covered on our website in the pediatric dentisty section under FAQs but I though that I would list additional topics that that are not covered.

1.  How long should parents supervise their child’s brushing? 

Until the age of 7 or 8 years as this is the age that most children have the manual dexterity to brush their own teeth well.  But it never hurts to keep checking periodically……

2.  When do permanent teeth erupt?

Permanent teeth start to erupt between the ages of 6-8 years beginning with the lower front incisors.  The lower and upper front teeth usually have erupted by the age of 8 years.  The first permanent molars have also usually erupted by age 8 years.

3.  Why are x-ray’s of primary teeth necessary?

X-rays are necessary to detect cavities between the teeth that can not be seen during a regular visual examination.  Unfortunately, cavities enlarge quickly in primary teeth so the earlier they are detected the less invasive the treatment solution is.

Dr. Richard will be passing out toothbrushes and toothpaste for the kids to help get them started with good brushing.

Dana Elementary Health Fair:

Here’s what been happening at Reid & Reid this December.

Hands On! Reindeer Run and Reid & Reid Rudolf Fun Run was held 12/4/11:

The weather was unbeatable and the turnout was great!  There were even more 5K runners that participated this year!

Rudolf’s Time of Year Contest:

We tried a new holiday office contest for our patients this year.  I admit we had some skeptical participants initially, but since we posted a photo of the staff by the contest board the response has been great!  Richard and I and the staff made pink stone models of our noses so the challenge is to identify which nose belongs to which member of our fabulous team!  The participant with the most correct matches wins a $50 giftcard!

Pepper the Pumpkin Was Here!

Each year, Dr. Richard drives out to the Bullington Center to select  our “Pepper”.  For the past eight years, we’ve rolled in a very large pumpkin to our office and asked our patients to guess the weight. We select a winner from Dr. Richard’s side and one from my side (the Ortho side) of the practice.  The winners receive $50 gift cards to Wal-Mart.

Dr. Richard Walks-A-Mile for Mainstay

Each year Mainstay raises awareness for domestic violence in Henderson County by asking men to wear bright red high heels and walk a mile down Main Street.  These high heels are really, really high and not the least bit comfortable so it is quite a sight to see men of our community strutting down the street.  Some dress up and some don’t but in any case, the goal is to raise both awareness and funds in support of Mainstay.  Here are some pictures of this year’s event.
